Jayshree Periwal International School, 2nd Std students visit Neerja Blue Pottery in Jaipur

Students of 2nd class from JPIS visited Neeja International, Jaipur on 27th and 28th of April 2016.

School is the building block for the rest of our lives, this is what JPIS is doing for their students. The purpose of their visit was to learn how many departments actually work in an organization.

The kids were ardent to learn the process of how Blue Pottery is made and the role of different members in Neerja. They had many vivid questions which were solved by our Marketing and Communication Head. The children were even made to paint little blue pottery tiles for themselves and were promised to get these tiles back after being fired in the furnace.

They met each and every member of Neerja family and learned that we all work as a family member in Neerja, not as employees and employers. What a great way to teach the budding minds?? "Hands on experience" learning!!! Last but not the least, they had a role play activity in which every single student participated passionately and learnt the role of different stages of manufacturing of Blue Pottery at Neerja. It was indeed an exciting event at Neerja!!!!!!!

When Leela Bordia decided to follow in her mother’s footsteps, she didn’t know that would one day lead to a full-fledged company specializing in the most exquisite Blue Pottery. Leela used to accompany her mother, a social worker helping the underprivileged, during the latter’s frequent trips into the slums of Jaipur. On one such visit, she met a family of five, living and working in a single room. They were artisans, creating beautiful blue pottery – Leela was fascinated by their creations but appalled at the living conditions of such talented people.

Leela then decided to work with them, marketing what they made and helping them modernize the art to make it more viable. Thus was born Neerja International.Leela then decided to work with them, marketing what they made and helping them modernize the art to make it more viable. Thus was born Neerja International.

“It was a long and hard struggle to make the potters understand that they had to make utility objects and not just large vases and bowls. I persuaded a potter to make me some pottery beads for jewellery and the lot was lying on the floor of his workshop when a foreign visitor was passing by and came in to have a look. The visitor was so fascinated that he bought the whole lot, and then the potters realized what a gold mine their craft was,” Leela recalls.

Modernizing the craft, keeping up with the trends

Leela is personally involved in contemporizing the craft by designing new products and bringing in modern aesthetics to the medieval art of Blue Pottery. The craft, having originated in China, moved to Turkey and the Netherlands and was brought to India during the Mughal period via Kashmir. Leela travels the world looking for similar crafts for inspiration. The trips also help her better understand the market and the kind of modernization that’s needed to take them forward.

Neerja’s product range is mind boggling – pen holders, door knobs, wall tiles, inlays, beads, oil lamps, sets of drawers, lamp-shades and even wash basins. People are willing to wait for a particular product for as much as six months since the process is completely manual and painstaking. Neerja International has not interfered or tinkered with this process, and kept the craft completely original and exclusive.

Going online early

Leela handled the business for a long time herself, while her children studied and worked abroad. However, she struggled to make enough profits to help potters run their households. That was when her son Apurv persuaded Leela to take the business to the next level by going online.

Leela Bordia“We registered the .com domain way back in 1997. I think this was one of the best decisions we took. It gave our presence in the market a huge boost. Now, when we participate in fairs abroad or when people visit us, they tell us that they have already heard about us,” Leela says with pride. “.com was one of the earliest, most well-known domains, and it’s worked very well for us. We launched our e-commerce platform long ago, in 2008,” she points out.

Exports make up almost 50% of the business and scaled up rapidly once their online presence was established. People who saw their website contacted them for bulk exports. Today, online sales compose about 25% of their sales. You might think that pieces of art can’t be bought without having seen the real thing, but that’s no longer the case. “We are long past the era when people needed to touch and feel a product and then buy it. We have an office dedicated to the e-commerce part of the business,” Leela explains.

Their online sales are also helped by the fact that airlines have limited baggage allowances so carrying larger pieces is tough. Also, when people order online, they don’t have to worry about transporting a fragile product.

“We have established an identity in the market and I know exactly where my product stands. I would advise new businesses to take their time to make their own identity and then stick to it, because that is where your strength lies. And of course, to make full use of the Internet and its opportunities,” she says.

A Panel Discussion on Women Corporate Directors - Roles & Perspectives was organised by FICCI flo Jaipur

A Panel Discussion on Women Corporate Directors - Roles & Perspectives was organised by FICCI flo Jaipur at Holiday Inn on September 4.

The distinguished panelists included Manisha Girotra, Dr. Jyotikiran Shukla and Leela Bordia.

Ms. Alka Batra Chairperson and Ms. Minal Jain were the organisers of the event which turned out to be a huge success.

The idea of the panel discussion revolved around the roles that Women Directors perform on Corporate Boards.

One of the main points was that Women should not be merely assigned the role of a Signature Director and not assigned proper responsibilities. Another point that came up was of women not getting their due on the Corporate Boards. The faith factor is at a very low ebb where Women Directors are concerned - this thought needs to be changed.

The need of the hour is to have more Women on Board to see the tide of change not only in the Corporate scenario but as a whole instead.

Indiska Group Visit to Neerja International

Age is no bar ever for learning enthusiasts! A group of twenty women from Sweden visited Neerja International who were all excited about this craft form and learnt not only about the nitty-gritty's of it but were also fascinated by the vibrancy and energy each piece gave out. They listened to Mrs. Bordia give the talk like children at school and absorbed every word. They later went on a shopping spree at the store after they had satiated their thirst for the knowledge on the subject.

As they were invited by Mrs. Bordia for lunch at their house, they went only to find an intriguing little grand daughter who spoke non stop in Hindi. Along with their Indian Lunch she spiced it more for them by being possessive about the seating and kept jumping about and fussing. As they were women who had grand children back home they took it sportingly. Suddenly everyone was singing "inch windy spider" as one of the ladies asked her if she knew any nursery rhyme and she decided to recite this one. It was a heart warming experience.

"Language is no barrier where hearts meet" whoever said that, we know the meaning now. With flying kisses they all bid good bye to this little girl and said to her mother that she surely would make an amazing  actor one day and they all would love to come and see her first performance.

It was an eventful day at Neerja Office and at Home!!

The group was spellbound to see the delicate finery of the designs and exquisite color combinations on the Blue Pottery items. Pre-conceived images that Blue Pottery was a ceramic art and everything related to Blue Pottery meant only in Blue color was completely washed away as they awed with wonder at the vibrancy of the different colors and potency of this versatile craft form. Their notions that Blue Pottery was merely a craft form to be used for big planters, vases and pots to be used as side decorations or garden accessories was tremendously changed as they saw that this craft form was now being used more for utilitarian day to day use in homes, hotels as well as malls.

The group was then given a guided tour to the village where this craft form is professed. The perky group of enthusiastic youngsters was entranced by the humble abodes of the village craftsmen who toiled relentless to keep this ancient craft alive. The students were thoroughly interested to have a hands-on experience on trying out the craft for themselves. They inquired on each and every step of the process and made mental notes of them. Some of the students got creative and sat down on the floor with the artisans to knead the dough and form shapes in the moulds provided by the artisans. Under the expert guidance of the supervising craftsman some of the students tried their hands at painting of the tiles with their own choice of color combinations. Their glee filled chatter and sparkling eyes said it all as they held up their hand painted to their friends and teachers. They enjoyed the fun filled interactive afternoon session with the artisans at the village level.
